What Do You Know About Used Car SEM and Pay Per Click?

A Velocity dealer whom I respect very much asked me what I knew about SEM and Pay Per Click for used vehicles.  I replied by saying that I really did not know much, but we agreed to put the question here on the blog for others to comment on.  I would appreciate hearing the opinions from anyone, good or bad.  Also, what company/tools have you tried, and with what degree of success?

Dale – here’s my quick list on SEM vs. SEO

    PPC:
Quick/Easy to set up – ads running within minutes (if you know what you’re doing)
    Low cost
~30% of search traffic clicks on PPC ads (the rest goes to Organic results – that # will vary depending o who you ask – I tend to stay in this range)
Great place to test new strategies
Automatic reporting capabilities – high accountability
    Decent ROI vs. other options

    SEO:
    Higher visibility within organic placements
    Greater click-thru rates
Greater big-picture tie-in to your website (sites with proper SEO typically have better overall architecture)

I’ve always said a balance of both is needed. I use PPC more as a testing ground & for short term campaigns.

When used effectively, your total ad budget can be reduced while increasing your ROI and reducing your total cost of advertising per vehicle sold.

In answering your question about what company/tools have been tried, I just wanted to mention that I have had huge succes using PPC campaigns managed by eBizAutos (www.ebizautos.com). They are sophisticated, knowledgeable and affordable. Dealers have enough to learn in order to succeed in the digital space without also having to make themselves experts at SEM/PPC —- this is certainly an area where most dealers would benefit by leaving it to the experts. I am certainly not one and therefore rely on eBizAutos’ capabilities.
